In a move to strengthen human rights protection in Nigeria, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is set to collaborate with the Nigerian Bar Association-Human Rights Institute (NBA-HRI) to address pressing human rights concerns, particularly affecting vulnerable population like children in conflict with the law and women affected by violence.

The NBA-HRI delegation, led by its Secretary the 3rd Vice President of the NBA, Zainab Aminu Garba, said the purpose of the visit was to discuss alternative care options for children in detention, emphasizing the need for children's homes, especially in Northern Nigeria.

The delegation also advocated for the creation of family courts to ensure swift justice for victims of Sexual and Gender Based Violence and other form of violence against women.

“This initiative aligns with the NBA-HRI's mission to promote, protect, and enforce human rights within the rule of law. By working together, the NHRC and NBA-HRI aim to create a safer and more just environment for all Nigerians”. Garba added.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN pledged the Commitment of the NHRC to collaborate with the NBA-HRI, recognizing the importance of providing alternative care for children in detention and supporting victims of violence against women.

Dr. Ojukwu who was represented by the Overseeing Officer of the NHRC Human Rights Institute Prof. Osongorua Udombana said the partnership marks a significant step towards strengthening human rights protection in Nigeria.

He emphasised the need for stakeholders to implement the existing laws laid down for the protection of women and children in Nigeria to enable them perform better in the society.
