The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the United Nations to support efforts of the Nigerian government in establishing counter terrorism mechanisms to curb the spread of insurgency particularly in the North East.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu Esq made this call in Abuja when he received a UN delegation on a working visit to the Commission.
According to the Executive Secretary, establishing counter terrorism mechanisms will not only help Nigeria track the network of the insurgents but will also assist the Military and other security agencies with adequate information and strategies required to overcome insurgency in the country.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on government agencies and institutions that manage detention facilities to ensure that all facilities under their care are kept in line with minimum standards for the keeping of such facilities.

According to the Commission, prisoners and other detainees should be treated with respect due to their inherent dignity and values as human beings.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission Tony Ojukwu Esq made the call in Abuja when he led a team of Senior Officials of the Commission on an audit of the detention facilities of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja.

Ojukwu who inspected the detention facilities operated by the EFCC told the anti-graft body to ensure that detainees are allowed access to their lawyers, family members and medications.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has freed seven inmate of Kuje, Abuja Prison who could not afford to pay their fines, as ordered by the court.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu Esq who paid the fines for the seven prisoners during the flag off ceremony of the 2018 audit of prisons and other detention centres in Nigeria admonished them to be of good behaviour and avoid any act that would take them back to prison. The Chief Executive Officer of the Commission officially paid the fines through the in-charge of Kuje prison, Deputy Comptroller of Prison (DPC), Onoja Innocent for onward transmission to the court.
